The kindness in the US is often sincere but it is a passing kindness meant to be taken as a token of caring and often the acknowledgement is also a sign of respect and an approach of open friendliness towards strangers is taught. Many foreigners, especially Europeans do not understand that this is not an invitation for lifelong friendship or for us to follow up with a coffee where we swap life stories. It really is just a passing and momentary kindness, this for some reason makes people very uncomfortable. It is weirder to me to stand next to someone at a bus stop and to be completely silent, a simple hello and a smile never hurt anyone.

I was taught in a humanities class once that it comes down to strangers = danger in many European countries.. many invasions and warfare in their histories has created this cultural tendency to distrust strangers immediately on sight.
