I’m a caregiver for my husband who is 63 with early onset Alzheimers. Resources are extra hard for me, so im focused on this!

This topic hits home for me. I was caregining for my mother ( 1 year today of her transistion) for 9 years at home. I am a nurse and my mother was a nurse, prior to that I was caregiving for my aunt for 5 years at home. One would think since I have the experience of caring for patients that I forknew how to care for my loved ones. The most challenging thing I had to do, they were both with demenita. Just working through a system that had very little to offer in support, the spend down for her to get medicaid did not make sense, her primary care doctor was no help beyond the office care, the nursing home was not an option. Both had some finances so private home care was the best option. The burnout is Real and the abuse to the care giver is equally important. A lot of these agencies just fill you wilh reading information, that I did not have the time to read all that literature. I feel that this is something that we as Black people should start to have conversations about years in advance and the other siblings need to be more involved. Leaving this care to one person is too much.

Awesome topic! Now the topic of Neurodivergent kiddos needs to be talked about. Minority communities hardly talk about this topic – the cultural dissonance coupled with religion is a barrier that hinders our kiddos from thriving…..Enjoyed this topic…thank you Laterras.

This was a great topic, much needed information. I myself worked as a caregiver for my profession many years but have always helped take care of love ones as well. I now currently take care one of my husband’s aunts in our home full time . Caregiver burnout is real and don’t really get any help from other family members. No one really understands what we go through on a day to day basis because things can change with her illness just like that. All most professionals and family and friends alike can tell us is to put her in a nursing home which is not such a good option for us. At the end of the day all I would like is some more help/ relief from time to time so that I don’t get burnout that’s all.😞

As I found myself thrust into the caregiver role, a shift in my perspective of “I don’t have to take care of my parents, I get to;” gives me the resilience to continue. This conversation and information is such a blessing!🙌🏽

Although working by indie contract I still took care of my mom who passed in 2021 and her husband so I took the Caregiver Certificate Course offered by Family Caregiver Support Program and glad I did, very helpful and educational.

Heyyyy King Laterras!! I am still committed, but I missed your live. This was an EXCELLENT video and right on time!! My hubby and I are caring for my 92 year old daddy!! It’s tough and the weak cannot endure this uncertain season in our lives!! My youngest daughter is caring for husband who suffers from MS at the age of 29 years old. Caregivers, are different ages. Thank you for having this lovely Queen on your famous yellow couch!!
