• I have mixed feelings with that. If they want to drink champagne, I really don't care, let them drink it. But if they order champagne just to show off, it's a habit I'd like it to die off.

  • Progressiveness in that sense are just smoke and mirrors for tourists. However, the Dutch have taken a very liberal stance when it comes to LGBTQ population, euthanasia, light drugs. Amsterdam and other cities are having their Red Light Districts, but this is not where you would normally find the locals. In reality, the Dutch are amazing, down-to-earth people, very practical, direct, financially saavy, and they tolerate drunk tourists falling in Amsterdam channels - just for tourism's sake. But since recently there has been a push to discourage such tourists from coming to visit.

  • Look at the Nordics, they're really progressive in many regards yet are conformist as hell. Jantelagen and all that.

  • The “progressiveness” and “tolerance” of the Dutch is a complete myth the Dutch try to keep up. Unfortunately, it is far from the truth. The Dutch have voted conservative right for decades and now even voted the extreme-right into office.
