Born in US, but also been Irish citizen for about 6 years now. Just moved back to Chicago after being in Cork area for last 5 years. I found Ireland to be largely devoid of any Catholic influence, even though I grew up going to US Catholic schools, so I understand that influence well. Sure, plenty of young people still go to Catholic school there, but I only knew one person that attended church. No doubt the history was Catholic, but the young generation has totally put it in the rearview mirror. Honestly, I didn’t find it was any different than rest of Europe.

In many ways, all of this is a mute point because there is really only one issue in Ireland – and it’s HOUSING, HOUSING, and HOUSING. There’s no way one can possibly overstate how severe the housing crisis in Ireland is – and it affects every aspect of a young person’s life. Relationships have been decimated by the crisis. It has divided the society into two halves – those that own properly and those that have been left far, far behind. 70% of young people want to leave Ireland. Who can blame them? The government has thrown them under the bus.

And while there were some comments about Cork not being as metropolitan as Dublin, I have a hard time relating to that since the first question that I would ask anybody was where there were from because there were so many immigrants in the Cork area due to the tech and pharma companies. I found it to be more international than Chicago.

to be honest I prefer these episodes on the culture. of course you will mentioned dating as well in them, but talking about dating culture without the wider context of culture is only a part of the information. you could go even deeper than this video in researching the culture, it is very interesting. and this way by the time you get to dating we already have an idea about the religious and political context which shapes people's behaviour. we are not surprised by it and you are not wondering "but why are they like this?" it is pretty clear why certain culture is the way it is when it comes to dating.

Wow, I had no idea that Ireland had those restrictions until relatively recently. Seems like there's lots of similarities with dating in the UK.
