Express curiosity and give the other person a chance to share their opinion.

“Excuse me, can you help me find my way to the fiction section?”
Let someone step into a leadership role (works nicely woman → man).

“I noticed you and I had to say I like how you’re reading a real book. Most people are just glued to their phones.”
Show that you’ve noticed and appreciated something about who they are. (Complimenting behaviour is a strong starting point man → woman.)
