I’ve just always had low self-esteem, and with women I have only really known rejection, I just realise in some ways that I can’t really deal with it and it feels like a really negative personal assessment.
Same with publishing. Get used to rejection and reflecting on finding your (actual) audience.

Rejection feels better than not going for it with a woman who you desire. That is far worse. That eats you up inside. It makes you feel cowardly. Rejection means you can walk away knowing you had the balls to pursue your desires, regardless of outcome
