WOW! Thank you so much for this video. I always put other people’s needs before mine and have been told by my by daughter that my needs matter too. I have met guys who did all the talking and not asking me anything about me. Now I know how to remedy that.
Wow, your story is very similar to mine. Christian upbringing: put others before yourself. Family rule: don’t make waves, keep the peace. Narc mother: I wasn’t taught or allowed to set boundaries. Constant, subtle critism: Im not o.k., theres something wrong with me. Social experiences in my teens that confirmed my parents view of me. I was very unhappy and finally in my 30’s I decided to watch people who got what they wanted. Amazing!! They asked for it!! Then in my late 50’s someone came into my life who validated and celebrated me for the first time. It gave me wings!!

Thank you so much for this timely video! Currently, I’ve been going through this stage with my family, friends, work, and men I’ve been dating. For a long time, I have been trying to find balance in my life. That would make me and the people around me happy. But in the end, I’m the one who is depleted and unhappy. Because, my needs are not being met. Since I was a child, always put my needs on the back burner and put others first. That continued into my adulthood. Now that I’ve discovered my worth. I begin to speak my mind and ask for the things that I want. I’ve come to the realization. Like everyone else, I’m worth it and deserve it. I’m not saying it as if I’m privileged and entitled. But I’m a beautiful person inside out. I treat others the way I desire to be treated. I never ask anyone for anything more than I’m willing to give. But people always want to be on the receiving end and not the giving end. As an adult, I take full ownership and responsibility for allowing people to treat me this way. But no more! Now that I have found my worth and put emphasis on taking better care of me. I found my voice. Now that I’m utilizing it, some people have a problem with it. Because they can no longer control you. At this stage in my life, I’m removing all the toxins just for my own survival, peace of mind and happiness. Thank you so much for producing this video! This is a confirmation from God. Nice example, thank-you Mat. I build self esteem by accomplishing goals, but have learned that if I show respect/ consideration for the other person, it is much easier to ask for what I want. So many people, like you say, do not respect/love themselves. As the Bible teaches, “love thy neighbor AS thyself”. We forget/reject ourselves too often.

I have been having self esteem issues for a few years but I was humiliated during the week and it destroyed me. So this is my sign.
This was a greatly insightful video! Considering my New Years resolution has been to become more assertive because I found out one of the main reasons my relationships went astray was because I yielded all the time to meet everyone else’s demands and never even considered what *I* wanted or needed.
I found out that actually doing things, getting something done even if it seems minor or trivial gives me a sense of accomplishment that then boosts my self-esteem because I’m proud that I did something, took some power, instead of waiting for Life to happen or just pass me by, waiting aimlessly and endlessly…
Voicing out my opinions in business meetings and participating instead of being under the false belief that my input doesn’t matter…

Self-esteem is really the key to so many good things in life. I don’t have one thing that I do to build up my self-esteem other than to remind myself that if I do not speak up or do for myself, no one else will.

I agree, Marion.I have always thought that good self esteem, good self confidence comes from knowing that you can handle whatever Life throws at you. But if you know you cannot, you are screwed, especially if it is not possible for you to develop those skills, ie because you are physically disabled, have poor learning skills, whatever. Then there is NOTHING in your life that you know you can sell, that people will want.

And guess what? The more you do things that take courage – the more your self-esteem grows, and so does your confidence.
So in summary, if you want to raise your Self-Esteem – start facing your problems head-on.
Because every time you shy away from your problems – you’re getting weaker, but when you do decide to face them, you’re getting stronger.

So important advise for me! I always hesitate to ask something for myself. And it is a signal for my subconscious mind that I’m not worthy of it. Next time I will be self assertive! I deserve the best in my life!
Matt I have really enjoyed this video because having your needs met is very important. Receiving is equally as important as giving. One thing that you can start with to build self esteem is simply saying ‘Thank you’ when someone pays you a compliment. When you have low self-esteem it’s very easy to dismiss it and push the compliment away, but without realising it, you’re unintentionally telling the other person their compliment is a lie. Saying thank you is a very effective way to accept the compliment, and this can be a starting point to build self-esteem.
