If you want to pet a cat, you’ll do a small attempt, to see how it’s going, what’s the reaction, and to reassure the cat. it takes some time to tame anybody.
The trick is that timid people (like the one I used to be) are also scared of touching people, and instead of going smoothly, they do it abrutly, because they suddenly find energy to overcome their internal resistance ! But, with a cat, you would also have a negative reaction, just because the cat will be scared !
On the other hand, once a soft caress on the back of your cat was accepted (and only in this case), you can try to caress her head, then to take her in your arms, etc.
That’s the idea of physical escalation …
