I dated an Austrian. Same problem! He thought Americans talk too much too.
Austrians like Germans, Northern Europe and maybe Switzerland are known to be introverted countries. Anybody that's talkative, very social and inviting they don't seem to like.

I'm in Chicago. I went into the store across from the post office. I was thirsty asked for a drink. Guy behind the counter asks 'do you want anything to eat?" I go: no, thanks. He asks "Why?" O_o... dude, why don't I want something to eat? Um... I'm not hungry, what do you want from me.
I ate pizza three times while in Chicago. It sucked every time.
