Southern woman here. Bless your heart is not always insulting. Context, tone & inflection matter. It can be everything from an expression of sympathy to exasperation to a knife cut to your ego. Bless his heart though, he didn't grow up from around here, so he can be forgiven for not knowing.

@KimberlyGreen Northerner here, raised by southerners. While I agree with you, I think we in the north don't always understand your context, tone and inflection in the south.
Just an honest, sometimey observation regarding this northerner's, southern extended family, lol.
